My dad and Bernie went to hear Charlie and Lucy Wedemeyer speak at Central Union Church this morning. As they noticed dad was one of the only listeners in the audience with ALS, Lucy and Charlie went to speak to them afterwards and wanted to take a picture of Charlie and my dad. They exchanged emails and reflected on how there are many athletes, including Dick Jensen, that are being afflicted with this disease. My dad and Charlie are around the same age and played against each other in high school sports like football. Another spectator in the audience was a Mau (with the last name "Mow", but we're all related) who recognized Dad as the Mau Club president (although my dad didn't remember who she was) and wanted to buy the Wedemeyer's book for dad. The book, entitled Charlie's Victory, is a book written by Charlie and Lucy recounting their days in Hawai'i, and the struggles and triumphs of dealing with ALS. Lucy autographed my dad's copy. It was a very inspirational speech, and although they did not focus on talking about ALS, but more about how God and faith has pulled them through this and led them on this journey around the world to talk about fighting the incurable disease, Charlie and Lucy definitely impacted my dad today. Later on, we were at Ala Moana food court eating lunch, and these old people came and sat across from us. We found out they were at the same speech this morning. They were in town for the 50th high school reunion from Punahou. Charlie is in town for his 40th. How random is that?!
Read the article below from today's Honolulu Advertiser about Charlie Wedemeyer, who is being recognized by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association this week.
