What Next?

Monday, 17 January 2005

This afternoon, when parents came to pick up the students, they asked if I heard about the news. I hadn't, and they told me that there was an accident in the MRT underground subway at 8 am this morning. The MRT is a new subway system that many commuters use around Bangkok. One train collided into another, and there were about 700 people in one train. About 100 people got injured or hurt, but there were no fatalities. P'Maiy, Jun's mother, said we were planning on taking that subway on Saturday when we go to Na's (Jun's cousin) college graduation ceremony. They're a little leery now.

They were asking, why are all these things happening in Thailand? First, the earthquake. Then, the tsunami. Last week, there was a huge fire in one of the business buildings in Bangkok and it burnt down, along with 5 firefighters and one police officer who died. Now, there was this train crash. P'Maiy was saying the only thing that hasn't happened is something to do with the wind, because so far something has happened with the land, water, fire, etc.

Thai people are very superstitious and spiritual. Kinda freaks me out too. Today, Matt was also talking about a newscast she saw on all the ghosts that are down in Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi area from the thousands that perished in the tsunami tragedy. She said one person was driving a truck, and the back felt very heavy, and he knew there were ghosts in the back of the truck, people coming and going. Very eerie...
