Don't Pull the Bow Too Hard!

Sunday, 29 January 2006

Mike and I went to yoga again this morning. But, I pulled my hamstring yesterday when I was doing my bow pulling pose, so I had to be gentle with my hamstring stretches, which are about a third of the poses. It sucked because I know what I'm capable of doing, and when you're in a room full of people doing stuff, you get kind of competitive, but I physically was in pain, so I really didn't want to push myself and had to take it easy (on my left side anyway). My yoga teachers know what I can do too, so they reminded me not to push it. Heat packs and vitamin I (Ibuprofen) have been my friends.

Mike helped me with house projects like switching out light switches and adding solar garden lights along our 85 stairs. We barbequed short ribs for dinner in Kailua.

Gung Hay Fat Choy

Saturday, 28 January 2006

Mike and I went to yoga in the morning, and were pretty much exhausted the rest of the morning. We went to Chinatown in the afternoon to check out the Chinese New Year festivities and walk around town buying fruits and vegetables, BBQ pork and roast pork. That night, we went to Mike's coworker's house party. We enjoyed lots of good food, live music, and lychee martinis.

Happy Vietnamese New Year!

Friday, 27 January 2006

Mike and I went to my friend Linh's house for a new year's dinner. Her brother was visiting from California, and her parents wanted to have people over. Linh's mom cooked her awesome spring rolls and Banh Xeo, Vietnamese crepes, with an egg omelet, meat, and all the veggies, wrapped in lettuce or mustard cabbage. I ate about 3 of them. Delicious!

Then we played a Vietnamese new year's gambling game where we had to put out our money over the pictures we thought would be rolled out on the three dice. It was fun, but the conservative gambler I am lost about $6. Mike was on a roll, for a novice gambler, and made about $30. It was a really fun night with good friends, kids, and food.

Relaxin' at the Spa

Thursday, 19 January 2005

Since Jay was off today and could stay with dad, I spent the afternoon with Kai. I've only seen her once since she and her boyfriend Jason moved home from California last month. Like me, they moved home to help take care of Jason's father, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November. Unfortunately though, Jason's father lost his battle a couple of weeks ago. Kai made salads for us to enjoy with her dad, and then we were off to the day spa in Manoa. We pampered ourselves with spa pedicures and manicures, so I told Mike he has to take me and my pretty nails out on a date now. Kai's parents treated us to dinner at the fine dining tapas restaurant called Hiroshi's at Restaurant Row (Yeah, Mike, don't think you're off the hook.). It was my first time eating tapas...and foie gras. Very rich food. It was a good time, and nice to catch up with Kai about traveling and Jason's father. The funeral is this Sunday. Having been friends with Kai since my days at UW, as roommates and having our own adventures living on the mainland for years, it is strange that we are both in Hawai'i now. But, that's the thing about growing up in Hawai'i and having a strong sense of family. It always brings you back to the islands.

On First Friday, the first Friday of each month, you can view art galleries for free in downtown Honolulu. At the Hawai'i State Art Museum, we saw this funny sculpture of a sunbathing gecko (one of Hawai'i's most common household critters). Posted by Picasa

Eh, Go Fly a Kite!

Monday, 16 January 2005

Today, Mike helped me clean and organize my house, finally putting up curtains and more Southeast Asian decor and pictures I've been meaning to put up for months. The house looks much better now (My brother will be happy).

We picked up take out Mexican food and headed to Sandy Beach to try and fly a kite. My dad had this huge airplane kite sitting in the house. So we decided to give it a try. But, when we tried to put it together, we realized some pieces were missing. Mike tried to fly this little one instead, while I took pictures of the sun setting and stayed out of the wind. I laughed at him TRYING to fly this kite (if you saw how small it was, you'd realize why). Now, I can say, "Go fly a kite!"

After the sun went down and we finished taking more pictures of the surf, we drove through Waimanalo back to Kailua.

Do You Really Grow Taller!?

Sunday, 15 January 2006

We lazed around Kailua this morning, then finally decided to get off our butts and head to the beach. No reason to stay indoors when it's so nice outside! Mike went paddleboarding, while I laid out on the beach in Kailua, drinking up my water.

We drove into town to go to 4:30 pm yoga. I bought a special priced package for a year's worth of unlimited yoga....ONE YEAR! I know I'll use it, so here's my motivation to try and go more than four times a week! (yeah, right!)

We both had a great workout, still packed like sardines, then rushed home to get ready to see a movie. We managed to make it to the 7 pm show of "Munich". It was a very intense movie, but a must-see for sure.

When we got home, we had to measure ourselves, since fellow yogis are always talking about how you get taller from yoga (really you just elongate your spine so you are the correct height).

Yesterday, we had both grown half an inch taller. Today, we must have been sitting too long in the movie theater, cuz we were still our same height. Aw, shucks!

Yogacizing

Saturday, 14 January 2006

The Bikram yoga studio I go to was having a special all weekend, so all yoga classes were free. Mike and I went to the 10 am class with Leigh (whom he works with at the hospital)teaching. Leigh had me demonstrate the bow pose for the class, so now my back is sore, especially because I was pushing myself. When there are so many good people in class, and you're packed like sardines, it's hard not to compare yourself to others and push yourself in practice. Afterwards, we were both so exhausted that we took naps and watched the Seahawks beat the Redskins.

We visited with Dad and Bernie a little bit in the afternoon to drop off a letter that his high school friend wrote to him. Very sweet as this friend recently found out about my dad's illness and wrote to say how much he admired him in high school and college and how all of his friends are pulling for him.

It's very touching to see old friends come out of the woodworks. Whether they stop by and visit, call, or send a letter, it's always nice to know there are people out there thinking of him and supporting him through this.

The Rewards of Teaching

Tuesday, 10 January 2006

This morning, my 6th grade student came in at 7:30 am and asked to do some work. Since the beginning of the year, it has been like pulling teeth with this particular student, so I was quite surprised that he was so eager to do work, BEFORE school even started! Yet, at the end of last quarter I did start a behavior incentive reward thing with him, and we have developed a good rapport so I know he's been trying hard to do better in school.

He sat down nicely, and then asked, "Where's my work?" I thought he wanted to do homework, but he said no, he wanted to do ESLL work. So, I asked him to write his final copy of a story we started the day before. I had bought him a hash brown for breakfast, and went to prep some work. When I came back, he had finished copying his whole entire story, plus did extra work. I was quite impressed!

Marissa' parents flew in from Seattle for a short Hawaiian holiday, so I met them at the airport to pick up a box of teaching stuff Marissa packed for me. Thanks for the Trader Joe's treats too, Marissa!
